Wide streets with large landscaped areas provide many opportunities for improving stormwater management in the area. The project design is the result of extensive community input that assessed the community’s priorities for improving the local landscape, such as habitat enhancement, trail access, educational opportunities, and pedestrian amenities.

The rain garden design concepts reflect the natural topography and soil conditions of Sunset Boulevard, which are incredibly supportive of stormwater infiltration. Proposed rain gardens along Sunset Boulevard can improve stormwater management for more than 20 acres of paved surfaces in the Sunset District.

Another exciting feature of this project is the Learning Lab that is being designed to provide an educational setting on a variety of related subjects including stormwater and the hydrologic cycle, conservation, ecology, biology, native plants, and other environmental topics. Local schools are helping us program this Learning Lab and create related curriculum.

Improving Our Sewer System and Benefiting the Community

The Sunset Boulevard Greenway will feature innovative green infrastructure technologies, which may include rain gardens to naturally capture stormwater and allow it to soak into the landscape before it enters our combined sewer system. Because the majority of the City’s surfaces are paved, stormwater has no place to go other than the sewer, which overwhelms the system and may result in neighborhood flooding.
