Sewer System Improvement Program (SSIP)

Essential Construction and Field Work Continues
We hope you and your loved ones are safe and staying connected during these challenging times. The SFPUC is focused on the health of our teams and continued delivery of our critical water, power and sewer services. You may see our field or construction crews at work maintaining, repairing and upgrading our essential infrastructure. We are making sure they do so as safely as possible. We ask the public to please maintain proper social distance from our crews as they work.

Here are key resources on what you can do to protect yourself and others. New information is posted as it becomes available:

Nationwide, utilities are grappling with aging infrastructure, and San Francisco is no exception. Portions of our combined sewer system are over 100 years old. Routine repairs are not sufficient to keep pace with our aging and seismically vulnerable infrastructure. It is crucial that we upgrade our system now to ensure we can continue to protect public health, the environment, and our local economy. As we make these critical investments in our infrastructure, our community benefits program is also investing in a sustainable future for the people and places that make our region so special.

The SSIP is a combination of grey, green, and clean and is divided into three overlapping phases to maintain affordability. Phase 1 has been approved by our commission representing $2.9 billion. This first phase is comprised of 70 grey and green infrastructure projects across the city.
