Feature Watershed and Environmental Improvement Program Items

In Fiscal Year 2005/2006, the SFPUC initiated the Watershed and Environmental Improvement Program (WEIP). The WEIP will provide $50 million over the next 10 years for the SFPUC to proactively manage protect and restore environmental resources affected by SFPUC operations.

The SFPUC owns nearly 63,000 acres in the Bay Area and the protection/restoration of these lands is critical to improving ecosystem health and ensuring water quality and a reliable water supply. Funding for the Program will include $20 million from WSIP Measure A bond funds and approximately $3 million annually from operating funds.
WEIP Goal:
Protect and restore lands and natural resources critical to the operation of the SFPUC water system.

WEIP Criteria:
- Project is above and beyond normal watershed maintenance activities (e.g. roads, fences and trails).
- Project meets the goals of the SFPUC Water Enterprise Environmental Stewardship Policy.
- Project is not mitigation for the Water System Improvement Program (WSIP), the Habitat Conservation Plans (HCPs) for the Alameda and Peninsula Watersheds or any other project.

WEIP Objectives:
- Manage watershed activities and resources to protect source water quality, native species and their habitat and identify critical watershed lands, key ecosystem restoration needs and restoration priorities.
- Enhance public awareness of watershed resources, their protection and restoration efforts.
- Maintain up-to-date watershed assessment and management plans.
- Include key stakeholders in the WEIP.
- Develop monitoring and feedback mechanisms to measure progress against performance measures.
