Teachers can bring students to learn how the SFPUC meets the challenge of maintaining high quality sewer services. Your students will have the opportunity to see science and technology at work. Your students will also learn about career opportunities and educational requirements for employment at the SFPUC. Plant tours are open to San Francisco students at least 10 years of age or in the 5th grade and up.
Tour Specifics
- SFPUC offers tours to two of our wastewater treatment plants.
- SFPUC plant tours are FREE of charge.
- Open to all San Francisco residents 10 years old and above.
- Take 1 and 3 hours to complete depending on the level of detail requested.
- Limited to groups of 30 people or less.
- Groups and individuals must submit completed Tour Request Form at least two weeks prior to requested tour date.
- Adults are required to submit a photocopy of a current California Drivers License or ID card, US Passport, or other photo ID at least two weeks prior to scheduled tour.
Tour Safety
The plants are functioning industrial sites in operation 24-hours a day, seven-days a week. Hard hats are provided for you and must be worn at all times while on tour. Sturdy closed-toe shoes, long pants or long skirts are required for both your safety and comfort. Persons dressed in short pants; short skirts or open toe sandals/shoes WILL NOT be allowed on tour.
Special Needs
The tour involves quite a bit of walking, climbing of numerous stairs, and going underground in tight hallways and tunnels. We have no facilities for, and cannot accommodate young children, infants, or strollers.
The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission Reserves the Right to Cancel Tours Should a Plant or City Emergency Arise
