The SFPUC is engaged in developing an organizational Sustainability Plan. The common meaning of sustainability is the capability to maintain. In the context of sustainable development, however, sustainability is defined as the goal of meeting current needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. For a utility like the SFPUC that provides water, wastewater, and power services, the challenge is to translate this development goal into a planning strategy that frames decisions around current and future service needs, and their effects on the environment, economy, and society (the triple bottom line). read more

This report is the third of four key deliverables in the development of the Sustainability Plan and Program for the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC). It presents the strategies and initiatives that are proposed to initiate actions to improve SFPUC’s performance against its Sustainability Baseline Assessment FY05/06. It provides the basis to move into the fourth and final phase of the Sustainability Plan and Program, when SFPUC will develop detailed blueprints to implement the strategies and initiatives, including specific actions and targets, timetables, schedules, costs and positions/parties responsible for implementation.
