Services

The Power Enterprise is responsible for facilitating all electric service connections for City owned facilities to PG&E’s distribution systems.  This function includes assisting City Departments in preparing electric service applications to PG&E to meet project budget and schedule, reviewing and monitoring service contracts for adherence to the PG&E Interconnection Agreement to ensure that PG&E adheres to its service rules and proper cost accounting.  The Power Enterprise also provides technical support to City Departments on PG&E connection, franchise, and tariff issues related to electrical service to City projects.  In certain cases, our engineering staff designs and manages the construction of the high voltage distribution system on City property including performing technical review and analyses in the planning and design of 12-kV and 115-kV substations, 115-kV underground transmission circuits and conduit routings, renewable energy projects, and the development of new service areas at Hunters Point Shipyard and Treasure Island.

There are approximately 42,000 streetlights located within the City.  The Power Enterprise operates and maintains (O&M) approximately 22,000 streetlights that are owned by the City, and coordinates with PG&E on the O&M of approximately 20,000 streetlights that PG&E owns.  The O&M work includes responding to outages, damaged poles and conduits, and public complaints.  The Power Enterprise also undertakes planning and design reviews for street lighting systems with the Department of Public Works (DPW).  The Enterprise is in the process of performing an assessment of the existing streetlight system, particularly City-owned facilities over 60 years old, and preparing a retrofit/replacement program that will include specific recommendations, strategies for capital recovery, and an implementation schedule.
