Green Infrastructure Projects

Through Phase One of the Sewer System Improvement Program (SSIP), we will build, monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of eight green infrastructure projects  in minimizing stormwater impacts on our aging sewer system throughout San Francisco's eight urban watersheds.

The majority of these green infrastructure concepts were identified through a series of participatory planning workshops held by the SFPUC in 2007 and 2009 as part of the Urban Watershed Assessment. One project concept - the Mission and Valencia Green Gateway- was developed through community workshops held by the SF Planning Department in 2008 and 2009.

The following green infrastructure projects are currently underway:

GI Valencia Green
Mission & Valencia Green Gateway

This project may include flow-through planters and permeable paving, and will enhance bicycle and pedestrian safety.

GI Permeable Wiggle
Wiggle Neighborhood Green Corridor

This project may include integration of permeable paving into this famous San Francisco bike route.

Continuing to Green San Francisco

As we upgrade our aging combined sewer system, we will integrate a mix of green and grey infrastructure projects to manage stormwater and improve our sewer system. Green Infrastructure Projects will implement green technologies over the next few years while the Urban Watershed Assessment will identify green and grey sewer improvements through a long term planning process  over the next twenty years.
