August 2008 – The seismic retrofit of the water storage tank and pipeline on top of Mt Davidson and the rebuild of the water pumping station on Agua Way are beginning. The projects are part of the seismic retrofit of the Hetch Hetchy water system, which supplies your drinking water. Work is expected to last approximately 20 months.

Effective August 18th, some trails on Mt Davidson will be closed for periods of time during construction. Please see signs at trailheads for closure information. Detour routes will be posted once fences are installed. For safety reasons, please do not climb over or around fences or enter construction areas. Please help protect sensitive habitats by only using existing trails.

Tree and brush removal will begin the week of August 18th. Approximately 30 trees will be removed. “30 Day Notice of Tree Removal” signs are posted on trees to be removed. Tree removal will take place during Recreation & Park Department’s Natural Areas Program (NAP) approved periods with the least interruption to bird/wildlife habitats.

The Natural Areas Program is on site to identify and remove possible sensitive plants and to check and protect bird/wildlife habitats.

The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC)’s contractor NTK Construction recently had a subcontractor on site to conduct a control survey and rough stake alignment near the La Bica and Dalewood trails. A control survey is done to identify the location of existing and new water pipeline right of way routes. The route is marked by placing metal stakes into the ground.

Beginning in mid August, the contractor will use the fire road to the top of Mt Davidson to deliver equipment and supplies throughout the project. At times, pedestrian access on the fire road will be temporarily limited for safety reasons during equipment deliveries. Please use caution when walking on the fire road as vehicle traffic will increase.
