The SFPUC, together with our 27 wholesale customers, launched a $4.3 billion Water System Improvement Program to repair, replace, and seismically upgrade the system’s aging pipelines, tunnels, reservoirs, and dams. The program will deliver key goals and levels of service for water supply, seismic recovery, water quality, drought reliability and sustainability through more than 75 San Francisco and regional projects, to be completed by the end of 2014.
What’s the Project?
One of the projects we will be undertaking is the Crystal Springs Pipeline No. 2 Replacement Project. The purpose of this project is to ensure a safe and reliable water supply for eight bay area cities and the county of San Mateo. Cities included in this project are: Burlingame, Millbrae, San Bruno, South San Francisco, Brisbane, Daly City, Hillsborough and San Francisco.
The 19-mile long pipeline was built between 1900 and 1930 and is one of the oldest and most critical water mains in the regional water supply. Segments of the pipeline need to be repaired or replace so that the system will maintain seismic reliability in the event of an earthquake or other catastrophic event.
Background: To Improve Seismic Reliability of Your Water Supply System
The SFPUC operates and manages a major regional water supply system, bringing water from the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir in the Sierra Nevada Mountains to San Francisco. The Crystal Springs Pipeline No. 2 is part of the water supply system and sections of the pipeline can be vulnerable in the event of major earthquake or other catastrophic event. The primary objective of the project is to repair those sections of the pipe that are vulnerable to ground shaking, landslide, and liquefaction.
SFPUC proposes to repair and replace about 4.7 miles of this 19-miles long water transmission pipeline. The Crystal Springs Pipeline No. 2 Replacement Project is one of the many local and regional Water System Improvement Projects approved by voters in November 2002 that will upgrade and improve the reliability of the San Francisco Regional Water System.
Anticipated Project Schedule:
- Design Completion - March 2009
- Environmental Review Process - Completion - Feb 2009
- Planned start of Construction - Oct 2010
