The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) proposes the construction of improvements to the Sunol Valley Water Treatment Plant (SVWTP) that would increase capacity, delivery reliability and water quality.

The primary function of the plant, located within the SFPUC-owned Alameda Watershed in the Sunol Valley, is to treat water from two nearby local reservoirs. It also treats Hetch Hetchy water on the occasions when that supply does not meet required drinking water standards.

The proposed improvements include a 40-million-gallon-per-day (mgd) expansion to the plant, the addition of a treated water reservoir, and modifications of the plant’s existing disinfection system within the treatment plant grounds. The project also includes a pipeline component connecting the Sunol Valley Water Treatment Plant to the regional transmission system.
