- Committee came to order at 5:10 pm
- Four members present; there was a quorum
- Minutes of 4/4/2006 meeting adopted without revision
- Public comment: Mr. David Fierberg from SF Community Power alerted the subcommittee to a project currently proposed to supply electric power to the City of San Francisco via a direct-current transmission line to be laid in the Bay from Pittsburg to the Mirant Power Plant site. Mr. Fierberg indicated the SF Community Power will likely oppose this project. His organization feels this project is not necessary, will shift the environmental justice burden to the residents of Pittsburg, who will be subject to the impacts of power generation from fossil-fuel (natural gas) units there, and, according to a Mirant spokesperson, will have no bearing on whether the Potrero Power Plant shuts down or not. A major concern of the group is the potential destruction of two historical buildings on the Mirant site to accommodate electrical transformers and other equipment. Mr. Fierberg requested an opportunity to address the subcommittee more fully at a subsequent meeting. Chair indicated a willingness to entertain that presentation.
- Tour of NRDC offices at 111 Sutter Street, 20th and 21st floors. The NRDC offices have been given a gold LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating by the US Green Building Council. Ms. Audrey Chang, Staff Scientist with the NRDC, provided a tour of the offices, explaining the improvements made that earned the gold medallion.
- Committee members would like to schedule a presentation from the Treasure Island Development Authority, specifically with a view toward identifying the power aspects of that development. Possible date for the next Power Subcommittee meeting: July 6, 2006.
- Meeting adjourned at 6:30 pm.
