The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission’s (SFPUC’s) $4.3 billion Water System Improvement Program (WSIP) will repair, replace and seismically upgrade portions of the regional water system, often referred to as the Hetch Hetchy water system. The program, which is to be completed by the end of 2014, includes improvements to the system’s aging pipelines, tunnels, dams, reservoirs, pump stations, and storage tanks. The WSIP’s planning stages have been completed and most projects are now well into design, so emphasis has turned toward preparing for construction. Accordingly, the SFPUC is pleased to introduce its approach to WSIP construction safety.
