The City of San Francisco is preparing for the redevelopment of Hunters Point Shipyard. As part of this planning process, the City needs to assess wastewater and storm water management alternatives that support public health, environmental protection, and quality of life goals. Working with the community, the City will study the feasibility of constructing an onsite wastewater treatment facility at Hunters Point Shipyard (a decentralized facility). The study will investigate both engineered systems and constructed wetlands, and will analyze a decentralized facility in the context of the City’s centralized sewer system.
The study will be conducted by a consultant, Montgomery Watson Harza, managed by the Public Utilities Commission in cooperation with community and environmental groups represented by the Alliance for a Clean Waterfront. Oversight and review will be provided by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission’s Technical Review Committee (TRC), composed of leading academic experts in alternative technologies.
