At a press conference at San Francisco International Airport (SFO), Mayor Gavin Newsom congratulated SFPUC and Airport staff, the installation contractor and the panel manufacturer for a successful shared effort on this project. Final connection to the Airport grid is expected by March 2008.

SFPUC General Manager Susan Leal and Jackson Wong, SFO’s Chief Operating Officer, praised their staffs for their successful collaboration and noted that the SFPUC’s Power Enterprise will continue to work with the Airport to maximize the use of clean, renewable energy and improve energy efficiency.

The 456 kilowatts of power produced by more than 2,800 high efficiency solar panels located on the roof of the United Airlines Terminal would be enough to supply power to over 350 typical San Francisco homes. This solar system will save more than 6600 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2), a greenhouse gas that causes global warming, over the 30-year life of the project.
