Greenhouse gas emissions calculator for our electricity customers

The electricity we supply to our retail customers releases no greenhouse gases (GHGs) into the atmosphere. However, most buildings in San Francisco use other forms of energy in addition to electricity, such as natural gas for heat and hot water. GHG emissions are expressed in terms of pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) and calculated by multiplying energy consumption by an emissions factor* for each type of energy.

You can compare your annual GHG emissions as a Hetch Hetchy Power customer to the emissions of a similar PG&E electricity customer. Use the information from your energy bills to fill in the text boxes below.

The USA EPA has developed a GHG equivalencies calculator to help translate these abstract measurements (pounds and metric tons of CO2) into more concrete examples. Once you've estimated your emissions using SFPUC's calculator, you can visit the EPA's website, click the tab for "If You Have Emission Data", and enter your CO2 emissions on the appropriate line. Here is a link to the EPA site.

More details about the electricity the SFPUC supplies to its retail customers is available here.
