Project Update
On August 15th, WSIP contractor Shimmick Construction Company Inc. (SCCI) reached substantial completion for the Bay Division Pipeline Nos. 3 & 4 Crossovers Project on time and on budget thanks to SCCI, Jacobs Engineering, and the SFPUC Engineering, Construction, and Project Management Bureaus.
Three independent crossover facilities along BDPL 3 & 4 at the Barron Creek site near the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Palo Alto Hospital, and Bear Gulch site adjacent to the California Water Services in the Town of Atherton, were completed this month. The Guadalupe River site, located within the Ulistac Natural Area in the City of Santa Clara, was completed on January of 2011.

Project Description
Crossovers allow the SFPUC to shut-off the flow of water or move water between pipelines during emergencies, such as earthquakes or pipe breaks, or for regular maintenance or repair.
These three new facilities will be especially important when the next big earthquake strikes, allowing the SFPUC to switch water between pipelines 3 and 4 if necessary to isolate a pipeline rupture, or take one pipeline out of service for repair.
