Project Update Shank/Balfour Beatty (S/BB), the contractor for the New Crystal Springs Bypass Tunnel project, were recently presented with a Commendation Award by insurance company Liberty Mutual Group. The prestigious award recognizes S/BB’s achievement of working over 165,000 hours without a recordable injury since beginning the project in December 2008 through July 2010. Click here for the complete story. On the project front, excavation of the 4,200 foot long New Crystal Springs Bypass Tunnel is complete. An 8 foot diameter steel pipe was installed inside the tunnel in Spring 2010. Once the project is complete, the new critical pipeline will ensure delivery of high quality Hetch Hetchy drinking water to much of San Mateo and San Francisco counties after the next major earthquake. The project is scheduled for completion in Fall 2011. The New Crystal Springs Bypass Tunnel is being constructed to provide redundancy to the existing Crystal Springs Bypass Pipeline. This pipeline is a critical link in transmitting all of the water from the Sierra and East Bay supplies to the Peninsula and City of San Francisco. The project responds to Seismic Reliability and Delivery Reliability level of service goals.

A small 4.1 magnitude earthquake that struck the Bay Area yesterday morning just after 10 a.m. could be felt by residents in the Highlands area of unincorporated San Mateo County. The temblor had an epicenter near Milpitas and was followed by a few small aftershocks. The quake struck just as the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission was about to host a tour of the New Crystal Springs Bypass Tunnel project area on Polhemus Road near Bunker Hill Drive and Crystal Springs Road.
Four very close bids came in yesterday, November 11, to build the first ever tunnel under the San Francisco Bay in Northern California. All of the bids were well under the Engineer's estimate, and a mere $97 thousand separates the two lowest bidders as contractors compete for a backlog of projects to see them through uncertain economic times.
