Project Update
The first of the five pipe segments of BDPL5 - Peninsula arrived Wednesday, May 12th at the SFPUC Right-of-Way near the intersection of Saint Francis and Quartz in Redwood City. The five-foot diameter steel pipe is being trucked inBDPL5 Pipe Delivery from Portland, Oregon. Each segment is approximately 40-feet long, and weighs about 20,000 pounds each. More segments will be arriving at this location on May 13th.
The excavation equipment that will be used to dig the 14-foot wide trench should arrive on site Friday, May 14th and trenching will begin the week of May 17th. Stay tuned for more construction updates.

Project Description
The Peninsula segment of BDPL5 is part of The Bay Division Pipeline Reliability Upgrade Project, which also includes a 7-mile pipeline on the East Bay, and a 5-mile tunnel linking the two pipelines under San Francisco Bay. The new BDPL 5 will be built parallel to the existing Bay Division Pipelines Nos. 1 & 2, which were built in the 1920's and 30's and serve customers on the Peninsula and East Bay. The Peninsula pipeline is a 9-mile, 5-foot diameter pipeline passing through Menlo Park, East Palo Alto, Redwood City, and unincorporated areas of San Mateo County. This new pipeline will allow SFPUC to take the older pipelines out of service for maintenance or repair, and will ensure that water continues to reach our customers following an earthquake.

  • Tree Replacement

As part of the pipeline construction environmental mitigation plan, the SFPUC will plant replacement trees outside our right of way for every tree removed at a later date. The project team will also be working closely with environmental staff to protect endangered species and sensitive habitats during the duration of the project.
