The proposed San Antonio Backup Pipeline project would construct the necessary facilities to allow the SFPUC to discharge up to 315 million gallons of Hetch Hetchy water a day to San Antonio Creek or San Antonio Reservoir in the event of water quality emergency or Hetch Hetchy outages. The proposed backup pipeline, parallel to the existing San Antonio Pipeline in the Alameda Watershed, would make it possible for the SFPUC to discharge Hetch Hetchy flow while at the same time, deliver water to the Sunol Valley Water Treatment Plant (SVWTP) from San Antonio Reservoir in the opposite direction through the existing San Antonio Pipeline. This project would enable the SVWTP to treat the 160 million gallons of water a day to water customers during an unplanned outage of Hetch Hetchy supply. The project is provided in response to both the Water Quality and Delivery Reliability level of service goals.
