Project: East-West Transmission Main

Construction is approximately 95% complete.  Target completion date is Spring 2009.

The SFPUC is installing approximately 4.5 mile of 36 and 42-inch pipeline from the Alemany Pump Station in the eastern part of the city to Junipero Serra Boulevard at Holloway. Currently emergency water supplies cannot be pumped from the eastern part of the city to the west. This new transmission line will enable the SFPUC to move water from the east side of the city into the Sunset system in the event of a peninsula pipeline failure or other emergencies.

Construction began in February 2007 and now has has a target completion date of Summer 2008, several months ahead of schedule. This project is one of several water system improvement projects approved by San Francisco voters in November 2002 to repair, replace, and seismically upgrade the Hetch Hetchy water system.
