Laying first San Joaquin Pipeline, 1931                                         Working on Pipeline No.3, 1962

Three existing San Joaquin pipelines convey Hetch Hetchy water from the Foothill Tunnel in the Sierra Nevada foothills, 47.5 miles across the San Joaquin Valley to the Coast Range Tunnel. Because of deteriorating linings, these pipelines’ delivery capacity has been reduced from the 300 million gallons per day (mgd) for which they were designed. Because the existing pipeline system has only one crossover, shutdowns for inspection and maintenance often require taking an entire length of pipeline out of service, which greatly reduces the system’s water delivery capacity.

The San Joaquin Pipeline System Project will improve water delivery reliability and maintain water supply by reducing the amount of time any part of the system is shut down for maintenance and by improving the system’s water supply capacity.

Description

This project consists of:

  • Pipeline crossover facilities near Emery Road (with 10 valves) and Pelican Road (with 12 valves).
  • Installation of 11 miles of a fourth pipeline, 92 inches in diameter, from the San Joaquin River to Tesla Portal.
  • Installation will include tunneled crossings of several highways, railroads, and irrigation canals. The pipeline will cross over the top of the California Aqueduct.
  • Site improvements at Oakdale Portal

Note: Schedule and cost information shown may vary from the 2007 Approved WSIP Schedule and Budget. The information shown reflects the current forecast information published in the latest WSIP Quarterly Report.
