Project Update
In June 2010 the SFPUC awarded a $226.6 million construction contract to a joint venture of Southland Contacting, Inc. and Tutor Perini Corporation. The contractor began construction activities at two locations – the Sunol Valley and the Vargas Shaft area – on August 26, 2010. In the Irvington Portal area in Fremont, pre-construction activities (ex: installation of 2-foot exclusion fences) will continue through the end of 2010. Substantial construction activities at the Irvington Portal area are expected to begin in Early 2011.
The New Irvington Tunnel Team will be hosting a project open house on Saturday September 11, 2010. We will be at the Sunol Jazz Café, Main Street in Sunol, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 Noon. We will also be at the Mission Café, 151 Washington Boulevard, in Fremont from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM.
Our Construction Team is new to the neighborhood and we would like to meet our neighbors over a cup of coffee. Stop in any time at either location we would be happy to talk about the new tunnel and answer any questions you might have.
Please call 866-973-1476 or email fzamora@sfwater.org for more information.

Project Description
The New Irvington Tunnel will run 3.5 miles and have an internal diameter of approximately 8.5 to 10.5 feet. It will lay parallel to the existing tunnel between the Sunol Valley south of Highway I-680 and Fremont, California.
The new tunnel will provide a seismically-designed connection between water supplies from the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the Alameda Watershed to Bay Area water distribution systems. Not only does it provide a seismically sound alternative to the existing tunnel, the new tunnel will allow the SFPUC to take the existing tunnel out of service for much needed maintenance and repair.

  • Groundwater Management Program

During construction of the existing Irvington Tunnel, many wells, ponds and springs experienced a drop in water levels. Modern technology and tunneling techniques have greatly improved since the 1930’s, however, we still anticipate some impact to ground water. This is why we initiated the Groundwater Monitoring Program (GMP) with 38 property owners representing over 50 wells, ponds and springs. If tunnel construction should affect their water, the SFPUC can provide temporary supplemental water to meet their needs.

The last time engineers got a peek inside Irvington Tunnel, the 3.5-mile-long linchpin of the Bay Area's water system, Willie Mays had just inked the most lucrative contract in baseball history, the Beach Boys' "Good Vibrations" was a hit, and the future Silicon Valley was blanketed with zucchini and apricots. The year was 1966.     Read more
