In the Irvington Portal area in Fremont, pre-construction activities (ex: installation of 2-foot exclusion fences) will continue through the end of 2010. Substantial construction activities at the Irvington Portal area are expected to begin in Early 2011. The New Irvington Tunnel Team will be hosting a project open house on Saturday September 11, 2010. We will be at the Sunol Jazz Café, Main Street in Sunol, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 Noon. We will also be at the Mission Café, 151 Washington Boulevard, in Fremont from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Our Construction Team is new to the neighborhood and we would like to meet our neighbors over a cup of coffee. Stop in any time at either location we would be happy to talk about the new tunnel and answer any questions you might have. Please call 866-973-1476 or email fzamora@sfwater.org for more information. Project Description The New Irvington Tunnel will run 3.5 miles and have an internal diameter of approximately 8.5 to 10.5 feet. It will lay parallel to the existing tunnel between the Sunol Valley south of Highway I-680 and Fremont, California. The new tunnel will provide a seismically-designed connection between water supplies from the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the Alameda Watershed to Bay Area water distribution systems. Not only does it provide a seismically sound alternative to the existing tunnel, the new tunnel will allow the SFPUC to take the existing tunnel out of service for much needed maintenance and repair.
