This project will construct an advanced disinfection facility for the Hetch Hetchy water supply in order to comply with the the high level of disinfection required to reduce Cryptosporidium to levels mandated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s new Long Term-2 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule (LT2ESWTR). Cryptosporidium is a parasite commonly found in rivers and lakes, which can cause gastrointestinal disease.
This facility will employ ultraviolet (UV) treatment to disinfect all San Joaquin Pipeline flows. The 20,000-square-foot facility, located adjacent to the Tesla Portal Disinfection Station, would pass Hetch Hetchy water past a series of UV light arrays. Exposure to UV radiation kills or renders inactive micro-organisms like Cryptosporidium in water.
