Construction Completed: June, 2006 The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission and its contractor have completed structural and seismic improvements at Summit Reservoir, a 14 million gallon drinking water reservoir located near Glenbrook and Palo Alto Avenues in San Francisco. Built in 1954, the reservoir became vulnerable to damage from earthquakes, fire and deterioration from continual use. The East and West Basins of Summit Reservoir were seismically retrofitted as part of this project. Water circulation problems were corrected with the construction of dedicated inlet and outlet structures. Seismic retrofit work took place on the roof slab, pier caps along the reservoir perimeter, and through the addition of a new reinforced concrete liner. The exercise path around the reservoir perimeter was repaved and is now open to the public. The reservoir was placed back in service in August 2006. The Summit Reservoir Seismic Retrofit is one of the first Water System Improvement Program (WSIP) reservoir projects to be completed. The seismically updated reservoir will help to ensure the high quality and reliability of San Francisco's drinking water and fire protection for many years to come. | |
