Project: Sunset Circulation Improvements

Project–At–A–Glance

WSIP Region
San Francisco Local

Project Completed
July, 2006

Project Cost
$7M

Project Completed July, 2006.

The new supply line and tank upgrades increased daily circulation of water stored in the city’s largest reservoir, improving water quality. This project included a new 16-inch water main leading to Potrero Heights and an additional pipeline installation and tank rehabilitation in San Francisco's Portola district.

The objective of the project is to reduce the number of outlying zones dependent on Sunset Zone water. Currently high levels in the reservoir must be maintained in order to supply these zones. This project will improve the operation of the Sunset Zone by allowing McLaren tanks to feed the Potrero Heights distribution system. To do so, a new pipeline from the McLaren Park tank will be constructed to feed to the Potrero Heights reservoir. This will improve the circulation of water flow through the McLaren Park tank and will create a more reliable water supply source for Potrero Heights reservoir with backup from the Sunset System.

The project scope included installation of approximately 5,700 LF of 24-inch DIP and 1,700 LF of 16-inch DIP mains at McLaren Park and Potrero Heights tanks, respectively, installation of isolation valves, buried vaults, instrumentation flow meters and other related work. This project will also change the common inlet/outlet configuration at the two McLaren Park tanks to a dedicated inlet/outlet system and will include additional PRV valves and relief valves at the Potrero Heights system.
