The project was concentrated in the Portola District of San Francisco with work beginning near Gavin and Boyleston and proceeding southwest toward University Mound reservoir.

This project installed motorized valves at several critical locations. These valves will assist during emergency shutdowns after events such as main breaks, earthquakes, or other situations requiring immediate system isolation.

Presently up to 1,500 valve turns are required to isolate a valve at critical points within the system; during an emergency when a system needs to be isolated, this effort can take hours. This project evaluated the condition of the existing critical manual valves, replacing them as necessary, and equiped them with motorized actuators that can be operated in an emergency by gatemen. This upgrade will help to prevent damage to public and private property, and protect the fire fighting capability of reservoirs and the distribution system. The project included electrical power upgrades, piping, concrete vaults, street repairs and other miscellaneous related work.
