Project: Groundwater Projects

Project–At–A–Glance

WSIP Region
Water Supply

Location
San Francisco, Daly City, South San Francisco, San Bruno

Construction Start
March, 2011 (First Project)

Construction Finish
June, 2013 (Last Project)

Current Status
Planning, Design, Environmental

Project Cost
$100M (cumulative)

The Ground Water Projects are provided in response to the Water Supply Level of Service goals. There are three groundwater projects that address various groundwater supply initiatives. They are:

Lake Merced Water Level Restoration

Description

Although the project is still in the alternatives analysis phase, the primary project elements are anticipated to include:

  • Development of a long-term management strategy that includes an adaptive management plan and a plan for operation and maintenance.
  • Construction of a storm water treatment wetland, which would yield approximately 360 acre-feet (117 million gallons) per year for lake augmentation. The wetland would be approximately 5 acres in size and be located near the southwestern shore of the lake.
  • Installation of up to three groundwater wells that would be used as the secondary water source to fill the lake. Each well would have a capacity of approximately 1 million gallons per day (mgd) of water.
Location: Daly City
Construction Start: April, 2011
Construction Finish: May, 2013
Project Phase: Planning, Environmental
Project Cost: $18M

North Westside Basin

Description

The project would be implemented in two phases; the first phase would provide 2 mgd of water, and the second phase would provide an additional 2 mgd. The project would primarily include:

  • First phase of project: Four new groundwater well stations would be located at (or near) the Lake Merced Pump Station, at the West Sunset Playground, at the South Sunset Playground, and at another Sunset District site. Each well would have an average capacity of approximately 0.5 mgd of water. The stations would include a building to house the well pump and electrical equipment. The buildings at the Lake Merced Pump Station and the West Sunset Playground would also include a chemical room that will house equipment and chemicals for disinfection.
  • Buried piping would be installed to connect the well stations to the Sunset Reservoir.
  • Second phase of project: Improvements to or replacement of the San Francisco Zoo Well No. 5 and one or more irrigation wells in Golden Gate Park would be made. The second phase would be implemented when these existing wells are no longer needed for irrigation (after implementation of the San Francisco Recycled Water Project). These facilities would allow groundwater that is currently used for irrigation to be used as a potable water source.
  • Construction of a disinfection and fill station for the existing San Francisco Zoo Well No. 5 (completed) would allow this well to be used as an emergency potable water source.
Location: Daly City, San Francisco
Construction Start: March, 2011
Construction Finish: April, 2013
Project Phase: Design, Environmental
Project Cost: $37M

South Westside Basin Conjunctive Use

Description

The project would include construction of 14 groundwater wells with a total capacity of 7.2 mgd of water. Four of the wells would be connected to the Daly City water system, six (or three each) would be connected to the water systems in South San Francisco (operated by Cal Water) and San Bruno, and four would be connected to the SFPUC transmission system. Treatment may be required at some of the wells for the removal of manganese. Additionally, the project would include nearly 22,000 feet of piping to make the necessary connections.

Location: Daly City, San Francisco, San Bruno
Construction Start: June, 2011
Construction Finish: June, 2013
Project Phase: Design, Environmental
Project Cost: $45M

Note: Construction start and finish dates may vary from the dates published in the 2007 Approved WSIP Schedule. The dates above reflect the current forecast dates published in the latest WSIP Quarterly Report.

The latest data on Lake Merced's groundwater and Lake levels are now available. The SFPUC has been measuring groundwater levels and Lake Merced water levels to better understand their interrelationship. Data are being collected for several reasons, including restoration of lake levels, future planned groundwater development in the Sunset District and to study a pilot groundwater banking project with the City of Daly City.  Water levels are collected daily to weekly, depending on the location.
