The Sunset Reservoir is San Francisco's largest, and serves 60 percent of city residents and businesses. CBS 5 was able to take a rare look inside the underground reservoir on Thursday, which looks like an ancient Roman temple. Read more
In 2002, the City and County of San Francisco began a Dental Mercury Reduction Program (DMRP). The impetus for the program was that San Francisco's Southeast Water Pollution Control Plant was issued a revised NPDES discharge permit with new lower limits for mercury. In the 2002 revision of this permit, the allowable effluent discharge level for mercury was reduced from 210 n/l to 87 n/l. The permit also required that the City implement a mercury source reduction program. All sources of mercury were targeted for reduction, including dental amalgam that can contain 40% to 50% mercury. This year’s April 18 commemoration of the 1906 Earthquake was a reminder to prepare ourselves with emergency provisions, including a three- to five-day supply of drinking water for every member of the household. The SFPUC recommends one gallon per person per day, plus enough for the family pets. Also, 67 fire hydrants throughout the city have been predesignated for emergency drinking water distribution in the event of a system breakdown.
