At a special public hearing of the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) today, General Manager Susan Leal and members of the Commission outlined the first steps of a plan to tackle what can be done locally and regionally to prepare the utility and its customers for the expected impacts of global climate change on the SFPUC’s water, wastewater and power services.  Initial steps include engaging national climate change experts to study the potential effects of reduced snowpack, rising seas and hotter temperatures on the SFPUC’s water supplies, wastewater collection and energy generation as well as hosting a “Coastal Cities Summit” in 2007 to develop common regional and coastal solutions to prepare for the effects of climate change, also known as global warming.
