POSITION INFORMATION:
Under general supervision, on an assigned shift and in multiple locations, operates hydro-power generation, switching and water regulation equipment and facilities to ensure adequate City water supplies while producing electrical power in the most effective and cost-efficient manner; learns to broker power with other agencies following established contractual requirements; and performs related duties as required.
The essential functions of the job include: assisting in monitoring system operational status, including the checking of alarms, meters and gauges; assisting in physically inspecting equipment and ensuring that all normal operating parameters are met; attempting to correct or determine the cause of problems in system operational status and notifying appropriate personnel; assisting in reviewing pre-established schedules and real-time indicators and adjusting equipment operation accordingly to meet operational parameters; assisting in ensuring that water levels at multiple facilities are maintained within acceptable parameters; assisting in the communication with field staff to operate valves to raise and lower storage levels appropriately; assisting in starting, stopping and regulating generators and associated equipment to meet schedule requirements; using a computer to perform switching operations at transmission facilities in both local and remote locations; assisting in shutting down or otherwise ensuring that safe clearances have been obtained and that equipment is inoperable when maintenance or repair work is being performed; assisting in coordinating switching with other agencies as required to isolate transmission lines; assisting in purchasing or selling power from or to other power operation agencies depending upon operational needs; assisting in inspecting various generation transmission and switching facilities in off site or remote locations; assisting in transmitting information regarding the condition of such facilities to other operational or maintenance staff and takes action as directed; assisting maintenance personnel in the installation, maintenance and/or repair of equipment; independently performing minor maintenance or adjustments as required; using a computer to maintain logs and records regarding work performed and operational actions taken; compiling periodic and special reports, both automated and manually, regarding work performed; assisting in making daily water model calculations and reports; driving a motor vehicle in a variety of road conditions and performing other related duties as required.
Note: The normal annual salary range is $60,294 - $73,294. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Two years of experience in the Mechanical and Electrical operations and/or maintenance of plant equipment AND
- Possession of a current valid driver’s license
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience operating Hydro-electrical generation or transmission equipment
- Basic computer skills

SELECTION PROCEDURE:
Training and Experience Evaluation: (Weight – 100%)
Candidates’ experience will be evaluated in terms of its duration and relevance to job-related knowledge, skills and abilities for placement on the eligible list. The department may administer additional selection procedures upon certification in order to make a final hiring decision.

Certification Rule:
The Certification Rule used for the eligible list resulting from this selection procedure will be Rule of the List. The Department may administer additional selection procedures before making a final hiring decision.
FLEXIBLE STAFFING:
Two separate eligible lists will be established: 7480 Power Generation Technician I and 7482 Power Generation Technician II – Flexible Staffing. Appointees from the 7480 Power Generation Technician eligible list may advance to appointments in class 7482 Power Generation Technician II upon completion of eighteen (18) months of satisfactory training. Promotion to class 7482 Power Generation Technician II is not automatic, nor necessarily immediate. A performance rating of no lower than Competent and Effective and approval of the Appointing Officer is necessary for such advancement.
