A Biologist I/II in the Microbiology Section under general supervision, performs specific assignments within the analytical laboratory that include some or all of the following tasks: conducts qualitative and quantitative analysis of drinking and waste water; interprets test results and makes calculations; compiles data and makes technical reports; maintains accurate laboratory data management, QA/QC, and preventive maintenance records; assists in development of new test methodologies and analytical procedures for regulatory and operational needs; conducts testing to determine compliance with state and federal regulations; tests include presence/absence, multiple tube fermentation, membrane filtration, heterotrophic plate count, examination for protozoan parasites such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia, including collection, separation, concentration, detection and identification using specialized microscopy set-ups in fluorescence and differential interface contrast techniques; may operate complex microbial detection and speciation systems such as PCR and other molecular biological identification systems; may perform procedures for the recovery and identification of other waterborne pathogens such as bacterial, parasitic and viral agents; analysis and identification of potential bioterrorism contaminants in source and treated water; makes minor repairs, performs preventative maintenance, makes standard solutions and reagents; maintains skills by participating in Proficiency Testing or other quality assurance or training programs; Essential functions include: perform established standard operating procedures for qualitative and quantitative analysis of drinking water and waste water for regulatory and non-regulatory compliance. Additional responsibilities include field sampling, data analysis, prepare written reports, keep detailed and accurate records as needed; may collect water samples in remote or adverse conditions; may work weekends and holidays; helps train entry level staff in specific details of job duties; may serve as a lead person in the absence of the Section Supervisor.
The Biologist I/II works under the general supervision of a Supervising Biologist and may assist the Biologist III in non-routine work and special projects. Positions at the journey level do not supervise other professional employees, but may coordinate the work of technical personnel (Water Quality Technician I/II and III). The annual salary is $63,180 - $88,868.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Biologist I
1. Possession of baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with a major in microbiology, molecular biology or closely related science; AND
2. Possession of a valid driver's license.
Biologist II
1. Possession of baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with a major in microbiology, molecular biology or closely related science; AND
2. Two years of experience in a microbiology or environmental laboratory; AND
3. Possession of a current, valid driver's license.
