Under direction, the Senior Stationary Engineer supervises, on an assigned shift, the operation, maintenance and repair activities of a wide variety of complex machinery and equipment in a water filtration plant, Water Distribution system, pump station or related facility. Personally participates in operation, maintenance and repair activities on machinery and equipment, acts as Chief Operator when necessary and helps develop training plans and procedures, and perform related duties as required. Positions in this Class may be located in any one of five (5) Bay Area counties.
Essential functions include: carrying out and explaining established plant operations, methods and procedures; maintaining, prioritizing and reviewing facility project, preparing routine plant records and reports; purchasing supplies and equipment; monitoring and responding to SCADA (Supervisory Control Operating System); using a respirator when conditions warrant; climbing and working off ladders (up to 16 foot); working in a damp environment and confined spaces; walking several miles a day to inspect facilities; driving to all facilities and remote pumping stations for inspection; audit alarm screens and identify four levels of audible alarms; identify leaks by smell in case of emergency. Incumbents may be required to work weekends, holidays, shifts, overtime and may be on alternative work schedules. The annual salary is $90,480.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Five (5) years verifiable journey-level Stationary Engineer and/or Operator experience in the operation, maintenance, repair of a variety of mechanical electrical, pumping, and related machinery of a water or wastewater treatment plant, water distribution system, government establishment, hospital, industrial, production or commercial building, three (3) years of which must be in a surface water treatment/Distribution plant; OR
2. Completion of a recognized four-year Stationary Engineer apprentice program, plus one (1) year journey level experience in a Water Treatment Plant or Water Distribution system; AND
3. Possession of a current valid Grade IV Water Treatment Plant Operator Certificate or a Grade III Water Distribution Certificate issued by the State of California, Dept. of Health Services (copy must be scanned and attached to the application).
4. Possession of a current valid Class C driver’s license (Copy must be scanned and attached to the application).
Note:
A. Applicants who currently possess Grade III Water Treatment Plant Operator Certificate or a Grade II Water Distribution Operator Certificate may participate in the examination but will remain under waiver of appointment on the eligible list until proof of the required certificate is submitted to the analyst for this examination.
B. Upon appointment to Class 7343, employees may be required to take a State mandated respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) medical examination (renewed annually) and be clean shaven for respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus use. Employees may be required to pass CPR training annually and first-aid training tri-annually.
C. Positions located at the City Distribution Division require possession of a Grade III Water Distribution Certificate and positions located at Water Supply and Treatment Division require a Grade IV water treatment certificate upon employment.

City and County employees will receive credit for the duties of the class to which appointed. Credit for experience obtained outside of the employee’s class will be allowed only if recorded in accordance with the provisions of Civil Service Commission Rules.

Verification may be waived if impossible to obtain. The applicant must submit a signed statement with the application explaining why verification cannot be obtained.
