The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission has two (2) temporary exempt as-needed positions open for a 7470 Watershed Keeper appointment not to exceed six (6) months, 1040 hours. Exempt employees are considered “at will” and serve at the discretion of the appointing officer.
Under general supervision, the 7470 Watershed Keeper inspects, maintains, protects and patrols watershed lands, rights-of-ways, lakes and reservoirs on foot, by vehicle or by boat, in inclement weather conditions, with exposure to poison oak, rattlesnakes and other potentially hazardous elements on elevations which may exceed 5000 feet, to monitor for security, contamination, trespass activity and clean-up; collecting water samples for laboratory analysis, recording data from water gauges measuring reservoir levels, water releases, and precipitation measurements; operating valves and identifying repairs to be made on machinery, removing debris and other unwanted materials from watershed property; assisting with the repairs of fences and gates. Reporting and responding to various emergency conditions: fighting brush fires and taking preventable measures against natural disasters. The Watershed Keeper will assist personnel from other agencies and document all job related activities; attend training workshops, conduct tours of the watershed areas and provide directions and instructions to individuals or groups.
Essential functions of this class require physical dexterity in the use of chainsaws, weed whackers, leaf blowers and other powerful equipment to help maintain the watershed; operate boats, and a two-way radio in order to communicate with administration from the watershed including writing reports. Incumbents must be able to walk on rough and uneven terrain, and drive on mountainous roads, in snow and rainy conditions in order to inspect the watershed. Minimum Qualifications
1. Possession of a valid driver’s license (must be presented at time of interview) AND EITHER
2. Two (2) years (60 semester units or 90 quarter units) in an accredited College or University, with major coursework in either Watershed Management, Natural Resource Conservation, Forest or Park Management, Wildland/Range Management, Wildland Recreation, Biology, Natural Resources, Physical Sciences or other closely related fields; OR
3. Two (2) years of verifiable work experience in any of the areas mentioned above, while employed at a Water Utility District, State or Federal agency, or with a private employer responsible for the management of natural lands within a large watershed area.
Desirable Qualifications
§ Experience in watershed management, range management, hydrology, monitoring techniques and procedures for water and natural resource protection and enhancement;
§ Ability to operate mechanical equipment such as farm or forestry machinery;
§ Additional training in P.O.S.T. (PC832),
§ Ability to communicate verbally to a large group of people;
§ Ability to utilize a personal computer for word processing and electronic communication.
