Under general supervision and during a shift, operates, maintains and repairs a wide variety of complex machinery and equipment in a water treatment plant and/or pumping station; may instruct and/or supervise the activities of a small number of subordinates. Positions may be located in any one of five (5) Bay Area counties.
Essential functions include: carrying out and explaining established plant operations, methods and procedures: maintaining and preparing routine plant records and reports; Monitoring and responding to SCADA Control Operating System; using a respirator when conditions warrant; climbing and working off ladders (up to 16 foot); working in a damp environment and confined spaces: walking several miles a day to inspect facilities; driving to all facilities and remote pumping stations for inspection; audit alarm screens, identify four levels of audible alarms, identify leaks by smell in case of emergency. Incumbents may be required to work weekends, holidays, shifts, overtime and may be on alternative work schedules. The annual salary is $79,950.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Possession of a current valid Grade II Water Treatment Operator Certificate or Grade II Water Distribution Operator Certificate, issued by the State of California; AND
2. Possession of a current valid Driver’s License. AND
3. Four (4) years of verifiable journey-level Operator and/or Stationary Engineer experience in the maintenance, repair and operation of a variety of mechanical and electrical pumping and related plant machinery of a water or wastewater treatment plant; government establishment; hospital; industrial, production or commercial building; OR
4. Four (4) years verifiable journey-level experience as a Marine Engineer performing duties in the areas of maintenance, repair and operation of a variety of mechanical and electrical pumping and related machinery; OR
5. Graduation from a recognized four-year Maritime Academy with a degree in Engineering or technology; OR
6. Completion of a recognized four (4) year Stationary Engineer Apprenticeship Program.
NOTES:
A. Positions located at the Water Supply and Treatment Division will require incumbents to obtain and successfully maintain a Grade III Water Treatment Operator Certificate within 18 months of the date of hire.
B. Positions located at the City Distribution Division will require incumbent to obtain and successfully maintain a Grade III Water Distribution Certificate issued by the State of California within 18 months of the date of hire.
C. Positions in the Juvenile Probation Department will be required to obtain a Grade II Wastewater Treatment Certificate within 18 months of the date of hire.
D. Upon appointment to Class 7341, employees may be required to take a State mandated respirator medical examination (SCBA), renewed annually, and be clean shaven for respirator and self contained breathing apparatus use. Employees may be required to pass CPR training annually and first aid training tri-annually.
