Power is a newly created enterprise of the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) with an operating budget of $96 million for fiscal year 2005-2006. In February 2005, as part of an agency-wide reorganization, Hetch Hetchy Water and Power was divided into two distinct enterprises. The Power Enterprise focuses on retail power sales, transmission and power scheduling and energy services. In addition, the Enterprise manages the SFPUC’s power planning and policy relationships with energy market regulators.
The core business of the Power Enterprise, as a municipal agency, is to provide adequate and reliable supplies of electric power to meet the electricity needs of the City and County of San Francisco’s customers and to satisfy the municipal loads and agricultural pumping demands of the Modesto and Turlock Irrigation districts consistent with prescribed contractual obligations and federal law.
Today, the Power Enterprise’s portfolio consists of Hetch Hetchy hydroelectric generation, its Calpine contract and third party purchases. Consistent with its commitment to the development of cleaner and greener power, and to address environmental concerns and community objectives, the Enterprise has begun diversifying its existing resource base to include renewables, distributed generation, demand management and energy efficiency programs.
