Mission Statement
The mission of the SFPUC's Water Supply & Treatment Division (WS&T) is to ensure that fresh, clean water is distributed to their 2.3 million customers in the Bay Area; to provide excellent customer services; and, to responsibly manage watershed lands and reservoirs, water treatment procedures and facilities, and water transmission facilities. WS&T is committed to promoting the health, safety, diversity and professional development of its employees.
Division Scope
The Water Supply & Treatment division assumes responsibility for water from Hetch Hetchy Reservoir at the Tesla Portal in San Joaquin County. From there, the water is conveyed through four pipelines to customers located in Alameda, Santa Clara, and San Mateo Counties, as well as residents of the City of San Francisco. WS&T provides another 15% of the total water supply from reservoirs located in the East Bay and on the Peninsula. These local water sources require filtration and treatment at two plants. During 1997-98, Water Supply & Treatment delivered an average of 250 million gallons per day (mgd) to customers throughout the service area.
WS&T also manages 63,000 acres of SFPUC watershed property. Over the years, the division has carefully protected these lands that generate water, resulting in outstanding source water quality for SFPUC customers. WS&T also stewards other valuable environmental resources, including unusual species of vegetation and wildlife. They maintain 150 miles of pipelines which exist on right-of-ways in urban areas.
The reliability of these lines is directly related to WS&T's ability to protect the right-of-ways from encroachments and incompatible uses. Over 250 people with diverse backgrounds work for WS&T, including plumbers, electricians, carpenters, and civil, electrical, mechanical and operational engineers, watershed keepers, foresters, other environmental specialists, as well as management and administrative staff.
