The City Distribution stores, distributes, and delivers water to San Francisco. They also structurally maintain the water distribution system within the City, which consists of 11 reservoirs, 18 pumping stations, a network of approximately 1,250 miles of pipelines and 12,000 water valves. City Distribution also operates the drinking water system on Treasure Island.
City Distribution's mission is to distribute high quality treated water to San Francisco customers; operate and maintain storage and distribution facilities to a high standard of safety and reliability; maintain in City lands and properties consistent with public health and neighborhood concerns; and promote diversity and the health, safety and professional development of its employees.
Services
On average, City Distribution delivers approximately 80 million gallons of water a day to nearly 770,000 people within San Francisco. City Distribution has 235 employees and is comprised of six sections: Construction and Maintenance, Shops, Building and Grounds, Engineering, Materials, and Administration.

- Water Main Repair and Replacement – 24-hour response for water main breaks and the replacement of deteriorated connections to the City's water mains.
- Emergency Response - response to all multiple-alarm fires to assure sufficient water pressure and water supply for fire suppression.
- Leak Detection - location and repair of underground water leaks.
- Connection Service - connections for new customers to water mains and installation of new water meters.
- Meter Replacement - monitor and replace more than 167,000 water meters which measure the amount of water delivered to each customer. Accurate meters help ensure that customers are billed properly for their water consumption.
- Information - provide information regarding San Francisco's water distribution system to utility companies, land developers, property owners, and the public.
- Landscape Maintenance - maintain over 980 acres of SFPUC land, including right of ways, reservoirs, open space, and parks.
