The SFPUC Water Pollution Prevention Program works to keep pollutants from entering the City’s sewer system and street storm drains. The program’s efforts help reduce the amount of pollutants entering the San Francisco Bay and Pacific Ocean which surround our great city.
Like preventive medicine, water pollution prevention saves resources, time and money by acting on the root cause of a problem. The program focuses on educating residents, business and City employees so that they can take informed actions -- actions that protect the Bay, the Ocean, the City sewer system, and the health of all living things that come in contact with these waters.
Other SFPUC operations also help reduce environmental pollution such as the Water Pollution Control Division which operates and maintains the City's water pollution control plants, sewage pumping stations and combined sewer system, and the Pretreatment Program which monitors individual businesses that have been issued permits to discharge wastewater into the City’s sewer system.
