Mission Statement
The mission of the SFPUC's Information Technology Services (ITS) is to:
- provide data processing services to all SFPUC departments and bureaus; develop, operate and maintain all mainframe systems;
- provide a common platform and support services for personal computers, local and wide area networks;
- assure compatible development of systems throughout the SFPUC;
- provide advice and counsel to SFPUC departments and bureaus on the use and development of specialized systems involving data processing technology;
- and, promote the health, safety and professional development of its employees.
Scope
- Seventy-five Employees;
- ITS operates a central mainframe based data center on a 24 hrs/day, 7 days/week basis in support of large systems for both the SFPUC and MUNI;
- Supports a large network of personal computers including over 100 servers and 1,500 personal computers;
- Acquires, develops and maintains software for mainframe, network and personal computers.
Computers are important to the SFPUC, and ITS employees are charged with maintaining its computer systems. There are two computer systems used by the SFPUC: centralized mainframe systems and network-linked personal computers.
Main Frame Systems
ITS' largest mainframe system is the Water and Sewer Billing system. It processes information for more than 165,000 retail accounts. Additionally, this system assists the SFPUC's Customer Service with answering questions from SFPUC customers. Another important mainframe system is the Time Keeping system which ensures that SFPUC employees receive their paychecks on time. As a remnant of the SFPUC's historical relationship with MUNI, ITS also runs large enterprise systems for the San Francisco Transportation Authority. The SFPUC central data center, which houses the mainframe computer and also serves as the communications hub for the WAN (Wide Area Network) - this runs 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
Personal Computers
The ITS group supports more than 1500 personal computers that are linked together via a wide area network (WAN) linking all PUC sites together. A large variety of desktop software runs on these computers, ranging from word processing to Computer Aided Design (CAD) applications. It is the responsibility of ITS staff to make sure all the computers are running and that they run their business applications efficiently. ITS is always busy - the rapid changes in the software industry and the desire of SFPUC employees to have the best tools for their work, leads to endless challenges. Examples of enterprise support systems implemented and supported by ITS include: Primavera P3e project management software to support our CIP and other engineering/construction activities; Geographic Information System (GIS) to provide a map based methodology for information review and retrieval; a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to support our ongoing asset maintenance activities; a new electronic employee timekeeping system that is in the process of replacing an old paper based system; and an electronic document management system to better organize, index and provide access to the wealth of documents, drawings and other electronic data generated by SFPUC in the pursuit of serving our customers. Our internally developed and maintained Internet and Intranet sites contains PUC news, up to date phone listings, search engines, Project reports, open position listings, financial reports covering budgets and projects, digital images of SFPUC forms, and other information unique to our operating divisions.
